MASH Name Story: |
Full credit for our easy-to-remember name goes to one of our founding members, Mumbles. When a group of like-minded malcontents met up in the fall of 1999 to discuss starting a "family-oriented" hash here in Seoul, Mumbles had already been considering the idea for some time and had the name ready! It was a perfect fit that every expat who has ever watched the original movie or the long-running TV series automatically associates with Korea. The idea behind the words "Mixed All Seoul Hash" reflects the desire to have a hash that is open to all cultures, nationalities, genders, races, running ability, and hashing experience. Many thanks to Mumbles for the brilliant name! |
Logo Story: |
This was an idea that was fully developed during one of our first MASH committee meetings. Large Member had suggested the concept of Ying and Yang as being symbolic of our desire to have a "mixed" hash open to all cultures, nationalities, genders, races, running ability, and hashing experience. The decision to limit the color scheme to a black and white image was thought prudent to make it easier to use the logo for later reproduction, T-shirt designs, etc. Daddy Long Legs thought of adding the feet to symbolize what we are about, and adding the "On! On!" to each field was also a easy, logical decision. The MASH logo was introduced, developed, and agreed upon in less than an hour!! Sometimes the democratic process can be smooth and quick! |
First Logo Story: |
Daddy Long Legs drew this first logo as an interim solution when we decided to design a T-shirt to commemorate the Millenium MASH hash on New Year's Day 2000. It also served as the website logo until we had the logo properly designed using a handy graphics software program. |
T-shirt Story: | The Standard MASH hash T-shirt is the product of the MASH Committee whose creative energies were fueled by the appropriate libation late one Friday evening in the British Club while we worked together to conceive a design that was fun, unique, subtle, and reflective of our ideals. We wanted a color other than white because, quite honestly, we all have more "white" hashing T-shirts than we could ever wear. The color choice is credited to Snuggles. The design was a cumulative effort but I think we all agree that Boyscout played a key role in this design effort. I believe that Coyote came up with the idea for the vertical lettering on the back and if not it doesn't matter because Coyote certainly contributes to all our worthwhile ideas! |
Purpose of Design: | It is nice when you have a standard T-shirt that is attractive to regular hashers as well as visiting hashers. It was our purpose to come up with a T-shirt that we all liked. Based on the number of sales to date, the shirt can be considered successful. |
Millenium MASH T-shirt Story: |
It was decided to plan a New Year's Day hash on January 1st as many kennels do, but this being no ordinary New Year's Day we decided to design a T-shirt to commemorate the event. It was agreed to opt for something other than white to make it even more unique and somehow red was the color we ended up with. The front side design is Daddy Long Leg's idea. MASHers names are incorporated into the image to make it more meaningful to all who attended as well as to make them easier to sell later! The wording on the back was worked out by Riccardo Cranium (then MASH haberdasher) and Daddy Long Legs while drinking coffee at Geckos. |
Purpose of Design: | To commemorate MASH's 1st New Year's Day hash which just happened to be the first day of the new year of a new millenium as well!!! |
MASH # 10 T-shirt Story: |
It was decided to have a commemorative T-shirt as part of our first milestone MASH Hash (#10) and various themes were discussed. A common idea that all committee members seemed to like was the suggestion that we do something that included the flags from the various nationalities comprising the Mixed All Seoul Hash. So...the design on the front reflects Daddy Long Leg's interpretation of the committee's discussions. The order of the flags reflects the impact and role of various members actively participating in MASH. The text on the back was inspired by a regular skit David Letterman does on his TV Show. This design proved very popular and because of some miscommunication amongst the committee about what we should charge for on it on the day of MASH #10, we sold all of them very quickly! |
Purpose of Design: | To commemorate our first milestone MASH Hash (#10) on April 29th, 2000! |
1st Anniversary MASH T-shirt Story: |
It was decided that MASH should have a commemorative T-shirt for its first anniversary hash and Riccardo volunteered to design the shirt. The anniversary T-shirt incorporated the front design from our standard MASH T-shirt on a gray-colored shirt and had the words from "E-Coli Man" on the back. |
Purpose of Design: | To commemorate MASH's 1st anniversary hash on October 21st, 2000! |
Joint MASH-SouthSideH3 T-shirt Story: |
It was decided that it would be fun to have a joint New Year's Day hash with the Southside H3 (the friendly military group that runs south of the river every Sunday morning) and Riccardo Cranium took the lead in coordinating the event and codesigning the commemorative shirt with Ultraman and Davey Crotchit. New Year's Day 2001 was bone-numbingly cold and the SouthSide were great hosts!!! Only 15 MASHers turned up for the event but the long-sleeved, hooded yellow sweatshirt was quite a neat souvenir from the day! |
Purpose of Design: | To commemorate our 1st JOINT Hash as our 2nd New Year's Day hash! |
MASH # 25 T-shirt Story: |
It was decided to design a commemorative T-shirt as part of another milestone MASH hash, our 25th hash!! We decided to extend the international flags theme that had been so popular for our commemorative hash T-shirt but to change the design. The design is another Daddy Long Legs effort. As the hash date approached, we realized that our 25th hash would coincide with Earth Day so a related image was incorporated into the overall design as a nod to Mother Earth. The names of all named MASHers are included within the letters of "MASH" on the front with the top row of flags representing the nationalities of committee members and the lower row of flags representing the mother hashes of each committee member. Besides adding a fun, active element which serves to balance the colorful flags, the silhouetted running figures represent the range of age and physical prowess we have coming to MASH hashes. The flags on the back represent some of the other nationalities that have hashed with MASH! The count totals was inspired from another hash T-shirt DLL had seen somewhere along the way and gives a count-based statistical view of MASH! |
Purpose of Design: | To commemorate MASH's 25th hash on 22 April 2001! |
HATROK 2001 T-shirt Story: |
This shirt was designed by Dirkoff who did a great job coordinating the numerous hashes into the fourth annual HATROK series of "Hashing Around The Republic Of Korea" hashes during May of 2001. MASH hosted a long A-to-B hash on 26 May 2001! |
Purpose of Design: | To show all the logos of the different hashes that participated in HATROK 2001! |
Bandana Story: |
Our second Religious Advisor, Riccardo Cranium suggested that a MASH bandana of the same color as the standard T-shirt would be an easy item that many would want. He has been proven correct. The bandanas continue to be very popular. |
T-shirt Story: | The MASH hash sweatshirt can be credited to our former Haberdasher La Bomba who conceived of the simple, classic design including the "MASH" on the back! This shirt has been very popular as it can be worn in social situations beyond the hashing venue! |
Purpose of Design: | To have something for cooler days that could also be worn over socially. It was our hope to come up with a versatile sweatshirt that many would like. Based on the number of sales to date, the shirt can be considered very successful. |
T-shirt Story: | The MASH sleeve-less "tank top" represents our first attempt to get a hot weather shirt to expand our basic T-shirt haberdashery. We reversed the color scheme to add some variety to our selections and hoped to have another fun addition to offer MASHers and visitors. Unfortunately, this particular design didn't work as well as we had hoped for because most women find it a bit too revealing. Oh well. Some might consider such "openness" desirable or even fun! But then again we are a family hash! |
Purpose of Design: | It is even nicer when you can offer multiple standard shirts that are attractive to regular hashers as well as visiting hashers. It was our purpose to come up with a sleeve-less shirt that both women and men would want. Based on comments we've received so far, it seems that this shirt will be more popular with male MASHers. Maybe we'll do a hat next time! |
